The Horizontal Mode Natural Frequency of a Floating Pile in Layered Soil: Full-Scale Field Test Vs Mathematical Models

Abstract Pile supported structures can be subjected to a variety of man-made and naturally occurring dynamic loads. Dynamic loads such as those from rotating machinery include considerable lateral component. The natural frequency pile in the horizontal mode becomes key parameter design dynamically sensitive equipment foundations. It is not uncommon for structural engineers estimate piles using quick linear methods available soil investigation data before advanced laboratory tests on samples performed calibrate nonlinear numerical models. This paper presents results free forced vibration full-scale single pile, designed high-speed compressor unit, Hazira, India. Two different fast mathematical models, one following Beam Winkler Foundation (BDWF) method, another involving an FEM–BEM based method were used predictions against experimental results. BDWF was found produce preliminary stiffness at low strain levels. However, selection damping models are crucial accuracy that model able simulate response with moderate overestimation amplitudes.
